Object Name Photograph, Cabinet
Scope & Content A cabinet card with a photo of Henry Clay. The back is inscribed with: "Mullen, Artistic Photographer/ Main Street/ Lexington, KY."
Collection Henry Clay Memorial Foundation
Notes The photographer of the daguerreotype reproduced on this cabinet card is unknown. This image appears between p. 292 and p. 293 of The True Henry Clay by Joseph M. Rogers with the caption "From a daguerreotype taken in 1847. Declared by many of his most intimate friends to be the most characteristic portrait of Clay's mature years that exists. Photographed especially for this volume." It is unknown whether Mr. Rogers photographed the daguerreotype or a copy for his book. He photographed many such items in family collections and may have photographed this cabinet card for the image in his book as it was then in Lexington in the collection of Josephine Russell Erwin Clay, and other images were made of things in her possession and on her farm for the book.
